The Cure (chocolate / emerald green / lime green) is a silkscreen print produced by Damien Hirst on Somerset Tub. The print was made in 2014 and in it, the artist depicts a two-colour pill, rendered in two bright shades of green, emerald green and lime green. The pill, which is rendered against a chocolate backdrop, is uncharacteristically large in size and dominates the entire composition, making it the focal point of the print.

The Cure (chocolate / emerald green / lime green) is part of Hirst’s The Cure series which is composed of thirty silkscreen prints. In this series, Hirst renders a singular pill in a combination of two colour tones against a bold and vibrant coloured backdrop. The colour of the pill tends to clash with the background colour, as seen in this print, which has the effect of drawing the viewer’s attention towards the pill. The series is centred on the minimalist aesthetic of the medicinal pill. Despite its simple appearance, medicinal products work in extremely complex and wonderful ways.

The Cure is not the only series of works by Hirst in which the artist explores the phenomenon of modern medicine. While studying Fine Arts at Goldsmiths in 1988, Hirst began his Medicine Cabinets series in which the artist constructed various cabinets filled with the empty packets of his grandmother’s medication. After The Cure, Hirst further developed this fascination in his Eat the Rich series, produced in 2017. Hirst’s art reflects his interest in life and death as well as the power of science and contemporary belief systems such as medicine.
